Facilitated by Greta Byrum
In September 2026, Greta brought two workshops to the Council of State Libraries of the Northeast’s annual conference on behalf of the New York State Library. Libraries are champions and leaders of equitable, universal access to the internet and digital tools. By filling in gaps not addressed by other institutions, libraries ensure that the public can find and access essential services, and that people of all ages and backgrounds have the ability to use digital services safely and with comfort and confidence. These workshops explored the evolution of libraries’ digital equity work, and ways in which library professionals’ code of ethics might apply to rapidly evolving technologies like AI. We then turned to dream about what’s possible – not to accept doom and gloom narratives as inevitable, nor to pin all our hopes on the success of AI, but to find opportunities for practical action and community wellbeing as patrons and workers grapple with AI’s challenges and potentials.
